If you’ve just started climbing and want to work with a coach on the basics of technique, this session is for you. We will overview the basic footwork drills, how to position yourself on the wall and how to use your core. This session is great for climbers with less than one year of experience or for those who want to refresh on the fundamentals.

Personal climbing shoes and climbing chalk recommended. Rox has gear rentals available if needed.

Want to belay for a partner? We offer a free 45-minute top rope belay class, where you’ll learn everything you need to climb and belay safely. Students must be at least 14 years old to take the class. 

In this class, you will:

• Tie into the rope as a climber.

• Top rope belay using a GriGri.

• Use climbing commands and perform safety checks to minimize risk.

• Setting up your belay device correctly.

• Mastering the PBUS belay technique (Pull, Brake, Under, Slide).

• Using approved belay devices such as the GriGri, Pilot, Mega Jul, ATC, or Reverso.

After completing the course, you’ll be able to access the top rope area with a fellow certified partner at Memphis Rox anytime.

Take your rope climbing adventures to the next level and learn how to lead climb! This two-part class will teach you everything you need to know to lead climb indoors. You must already be top rope certified and be able to comfortably climb.

Lead Climbing is the most advanced form of climbing that Memphis Rox offers. It mimics outdoor climbing by requiring the climber to clip into pre-placed quickdraws as they climb. At Rox, you’re not allowed to place your own quickdraws. Lead climbing is only allowed in the designated sections, where quickdraws have already been placed.

Everyone lead climbing and belaying must have their Memphis Rox lead certification card visible. To earn the certification card you must either take the lead rope test or the class with Memphis Rox. 

In this class, you will:

• You must provide your own lead rope with a minimum length of 40 meters

• Correctly tie in with a figure-8 and follow through and back up with a fishermen’s knot. Bowline’s are NOT allowed.

• Demonstrate proper clipping technique

• Demonstrate proper rope management

• Take a practice fall

• Correctly set up belay device

• Demonstrate PBUS (pull, brake, under, slide) belay technique

• Approved belay devices: any Assisted Brake device (GriGri, Pilot, Mega Jul, etc…) or Tubular device (ATC, Reverso, etc…)

After completing the course, you’ll be able to lead climb in the top rope area with a fellow certified partner at Memphis Rox anytime. 

This is 2 hour class meets every Monday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 PM.

The class focuses on exercises that support your climbing goals and injury prevention through full body strength training, mobility, stretching and endurance. The class features a warm up, main workout, and a stretch/warm down. $10 per class. Non-members must also purchase a day pass.
